Obviously to increase page rank in search engine result pages for different keywords. However, most of the inexperienced webmasters simply resort to traditional link building tactics like reciprocal linking, directory submission etc. They do not get much of targeted users from those directories. They only contribute to increase website0s popularity in search engine.

The best way to promote your site is to promote others. If you appreciate other bloggers, they will be happy to appreciate you. In that case, if you have a blog attached with your site, it would be of great help.
When you say something about some bloggers or websites, find out what others are saying about them. Let them know about your thoughts, a trackback will be just good to get visitors from their blog.
